DOWNTOWN OPELOUSAS READY TO SHINE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

(Opelousas, LA) - Downtown Opelousas will shine a little brighter this holiday season as 14 live oaks on the Courthouse Square will be fully illuminated with holiday lights. In less than a month, a group of women whose daily walk includes the downtown area, raised enough donations for this year’s Courthouse Lighting Project.

Cynthia Lormand, a member of the walking group and Friends of Opelousas Main Street Committee, said she and others in the group decided to take on the lighting of the oaks in preparation of the city’s 300-year anniversary which will be celebrated in 2020. Other members of the fundraising project include Jeannine Wallace, Kathy Hebert, Susie Glowacki and Alice Morrow.

The tree lighting project also coincides with and serves to enhance the 63-year anniversary of the nativity scene lighting on the Courthouse Square. The nativity scene first made its appearance on the square in the 1940s. In 1953, a special building was made to house the nativity.
The lighting of the nativity and the oak trees will take place on November 26th at 5:00 pm. During the event, there will be a choir and refreshments. Santa will also be on site for pictures from 3 – 5 pm. Attendees can also get a first- hand look of the DECK THE SQUARE Art Exhibit, which will feature decorated oversized ornaments in storefront windows. These original works of art will be designed by aspiring Opelousas student artists.

In addition to the enhancement of the oak trees, new plants in hanging baskets will adorn the downtown area. The hanging baskets were prepped and planted by the Opelousas chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Any business or individual who would like to make a tax- deductible contribution to help with the project, please call Cynthia Lormand at 337-290-0330 or send a donation to the following:
